Identity and Identity Creation Of the Paka k'eyau Tambon Ban Pong,Amphoe Wiang Pa Pao, Changwat Chiang Rai

Abstract

This thesis aims to: 1) study identity of the Paka k'eyau ethnic group in Banpong subdistrict, Wiangpapao district, Chiang Rai province; and 2) study the creation of the identity of the Paka k'eyau ethnic group in Banpong subdistrict, Wiangpapao district, Chiang Rai province. This qualitative research was conducted by governing folklore methodology, and it was analyzed based on the identity to identify the identity of Paka k'eyau ethnic group which is elaborated through descriptive summary. The study results revealed that identity and identity creation of the Paka k'eyau ethnic group exist in the production of factors in their living that are meal and food ingredients, costume, settlement, ceremony and traditional medicine. The factors reflect that the ethnic group preserves natural resources, and they living their lives depending on natural resource in the jungle called “men rely on nature”. As for their characteristics, they are loyal, sincere, calm and ordinary. Significantly, they are humble, and they have their own belief that they respect the supernatural. Their identity was created based on the belief of the ethic group that has been transferred through periods of time from their ancestors to the current generation, and the identity has been remained by ancestors’ teaching which has been demonstrated to encourage them to practice and apply the teaching to their daily lives. Furthermore, the teaching appears in the role of the Paka k'eyau ethic, and it can respond to the government policy. Despite cultural assimilation and social movement causing changes, their original identities remain strong.

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) ศึกษาอัตลักษณ์ของชาวปกาเกอะญอ ในพื้นที่ตำบลบ้านโป่ง อำเภอเวียงป่าเป้า จังหวัดเชียงราย 2) ศึกษาวิธีการสร้างอัตลักษณ์ของชาวปกาเกอะญอ ในพื้นที่ตำบลบ้านโป่ง อำเภอ เวียงป่าเป้า จังหวัดเชียงราย เป็นการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ (Qualitative Research) ด้วยวิธีทางคติชนวิทยา (Folklore) โดยใช้แนวคิดเรื่องอัตลักษณ์ (Identity) เป็นเครื่องมือการวิเคราะห์เพื่อบ่งบอกตัวตนความเป็นปกาเกอะญอของกลุ่มชน แล้วนำเสนอผลการวิเคราะห์แบบสรุปความเชิงพรรณนา ผลการศึกษาพบได้ว่า อัตลักษณ์และการสร้างอัตลักษณ์ของชาวปกาเกอะญอ ปรากฏอยู่ในกระบวนการผลิตปัจจัยการดำรงชีวิตในรูปแบบของอาหารหรือส่วนประกอบในอาหาร การแต่งกาย การตั้งถิ่นฐาน หรือพิธีกรรมในการรักษาโรค สะท้อนให้เห็นอัตลักษณ์การเป็นนักอนุรักษ์ธรรมชาติที่พึ่งพิงป่า “คนอยู่กับป่า” ลักษณะนิสัยของคนปกาเกอะญอที่ซื่อตรง จริงใจ เป็นกลุ่มชนที่รักความสงบ การดำรงชีวิตอย่างเรียบง่ายและที่สำคัญคือ มีความเชื่อ นอบน้อม และเคารพสิ่งเหนือธรรมชาติ โดยอัตลักษณ์เหล่านี้ถูกสร้างขึ้นมาจากความเชื่อของกลุ่มชนที่มีการสืบทอดและถ่ายทอดต่อกันจากรุ่นสู่รุ่น โดยการอบรมสั่งสอนของบรรพบุรุษ และการสอนให้ทำ ทำให้ดู และพาให้ทำ ลงมือปฏิบัติจริงในชีวิตประจำวัน นอกจากนี้ยังปรากฏในบททาของชาวปกาเกอะญออีกด้วย อีกทั้งเป็นการสนองต่อนโยบายของรัฐบาลในการจัดการทรัพยากรป่าไม้ ด้วยวิธีชีวิตที่อาศัยอยู่ในป่ากลุ่มชนดังกล่าวจึงต้องรักษาอัตลักษณ์ของตนไว้ แม้จะมีการไหลเลื่อนทางวัฒนธรรมหรือเกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางสังคม ส่งผลให้บางสิ่งอาจเปลี่ยนแปลงไปบ้างจากเดิม แต่อัตลักษณ์ดั้งเดิมยังคงแฝงอยู่อย่างไม่เสื่อมคลาย
